Complete details of the work: https://www.antichitacastelbarco.it/it/product/18th-century-roman-landscape-painter
The painting displays characteristics clearly linked to the 18th-century Roman landscape tradition and, in particular, to the works of Paolo Anesi (Rome 1697–1773), one of the artists most appreciated by Grand Tour travelers, especially the English, as well as being highly sought after to enrich the already significant collections of Rome.
His stylistic imprint brilliantly combines the optical clarity of Van Wittel and Lint with the tradition of the ideal landscape made famous by Van Bloemen. In Anesi, however, one perceives a ‘romantic’ sensibility, reinforced by a distinctive attention to light and shadow, akin to the examples of Venetian landscape painting popularized by Marco Ricci and Francesco Zuccarelli.
Helping to identify the territory in which we find ourselves are the ruins of a Roman arch, evoking the landscape surrounding the city of Rome, and the course of the Tiber, which punctuates the balanced layering of the perspective planes, which can be traced with the eye along the river’s course.
The effect is one of pleasing visual impact, not only due to the accuracy with which the landscape is depicted, but also to the skillful harmony of chromatic and luminous contrasts.
The setting, while faithful to reality, reveals through its atmospheric qualities a fantasy capable of transfiguring the view, reproducing the atmospheric sensitivity of light-drenched air and evoking a delicate Arcadian emotionality.
The painting is in excellent condition, perfectly restored, and accompanied by a beautiful gold-leaf frame.
The work, like all our items, is sold with a photographic certificate of authenticity in accordance with the law.
