Fine French Burr Walnut Pedestal Desk With Gilt Bronze Ormolu Mounts C1880
A large and impressive 19th century French pedestal desk, crafted in beautifully figured burr walnut and mounted with finely cast gilt bronze ormolu. The desk features an elegant inverted breakfront top with its original gilt-tooled leather writing surface, combining classical design with practical workspace. Substantial in scale and richly detailed, it would make a striking centrepiece within a study, library or office interior.
The desk is distinguished by its elegant inverted breakfront top, a form that adds architectural presence while providing a generous working surface. Set within the top is the original gilt-tooled leather writing surface, which remains in place and shows a natural patina consistent with age, contributing to the authentic character of the piece.
Constructed with traditional 19th-century cabinetmaking techniques, the desk features solid oak drawer linings with hand-cut dovetail joints, confirming its period craftsmanship. Each pedestal contains three drawers, with a further central frieze drawer, providing practical storage for documents and writing implements. The drawers retain their original gilt bronze framed mounts and escutcheons, and the interiors include the original pen and stationery divider typical of desks designed for writing during the period.
The desk is finished on all sides, allowing it to stand freely within a study, library or office interior. The rear panels are veneered with inlaid burr walnut panels framed by crossbanding, ensuring the piece presents beautifully from every angle.
All ormolu mounts are present, including the elegant classical corner mounts and foliate mounts to the plinth base, and the desk retains seven functioning locks. The original key remains with the central drawer, with six additional keys later made to operate the remaining locks. All drawers run smoothly and the desk is presented in fully restored condition, ready for immediate use.
Combining rich burr walnut veneers, classical French ornament and traditional cabinetmaking, this desk is a superb example of 19th-century French furniture, offering both impressive decorative presence and practical functionality.
