Plaque Croix De Procession Médiévale Cuivre Repoussé - Bishop In Majesty - XIVe-xve Siècle
Rare processional cross plate in embossed and chased copper, of tri-lobed form, dating from the 14th or early 15th century.
The decoration features, in the center, a bishop seated on his cathedra, dressed in his episcopal vestments and wearing his mitre. In his hand, he holds a processional cross, an attribute emphasizing his ecclesiastical dignity. The three-lobed ends are adorned with finely stylized oak leaves, characteristic of the Gothic decorative vocabulary.
This plaque was originally attached to a wooden-core processional cross, as evidenced by the three preserved mounting holes. It is made of embossed and chased red copper, today showing a very beautiful, dark green antique patina, particularly aesthetically pleasing.
By the quality of its workmanship, the finesse of its decoration and its excellent state of preservation, this piece is a remarkable testimony to medieval religious goldsmithing.
