The Slave Market, Orientalist School Circa 1900, In The Style Of Eugène Delacroix
Orientalist school circa 1900, in the taste of Eugène Delacroix
The Slave Market
Oil on board
26.5 x 36.5 cm
A powerful Orientalist scene produced circa 1900 in the spirit of Eugène Delacroix's great compositions, from which it takes all the romantic ardor and chromatic richness.
This work immediately evokes the master's travels to Morocco, as well as the 19th century's deep infatuation with the Orient, its markets, its horsemen and its lively scenes bathed in warm light. Here, the painter delivers a dense, vibrant composition, in which the figures mingle in a particularly seductive interplay of materials and brown, ochre and golden tones.
The deliberately free treatment of the brushstrokes, almost sketchy in places, lends the whole a remarkable spontaneity. The bright turbans, powerfully modeled silhouettes and dramatic atmosphere are reminiscent of Delacroix's Orientalist studies and most expressive compositions.
The work possesses a very strong decorative character while retaining a real pictorial intensity, typical of Belle Époque Orientalist painting, then highly sought after by amateurs and collectors.
Presented in an elegant antique frame with faux tortoiseshell decoration perfectly highlighting the warm tones of the composition.
Good overall condition.
