A painter deeply attached to Normandy, Jean Sieurin is part of the 20th-century French Post-Impressionist tradition. Born in 1931, he devotes most of his work to the study of landscape, favoring direct observation and the sensitive rendering of light variations.
His work, influenced in particular by Albert Malet, is distinguished by a supple, vibrant touch, as well as by a highly personal treatment of reflections and atmospheres. Shapes often dissolve into color, creating those characteristic fading effects found here in the rendering of the river.
This composition, depicting a bank of the Eure at Pont-de-l'Arche, stands out for the quality of its light and the balance of its construction. Less frequent in his work than his views of Rouen or the coastline, this type of landscape offers a more intimate, almost silent approach.
The river crosses the composition in a broad horizontal movement, bordered by trees with lively foliage whose reflections melt into the calm water. The subtly nuanced palette glides from green to blue in a particularly successful gradation, giving the whole a great visual softness.
In the foreground, the presence of a motionless boat introduces a discreet narrative dimension and anchors the scene in a suspended temporality.
The whole shows a fine mastery of pictorial matter, while retaining that spontaneity that makes plein-air painting so charming.
A work that is both decorative and sensitive, it can easily be integrated into an interior, where it will bring depth and serenity.
