Charming maritime scene in the style of the 17th century Dutch school, this composition bathed in late afternoon light features an elegant sailing ship flying the Dutch flag, surrounded by rowboats and fishing boats docking at a lively jetty. The sky, in rich shades of blue, pink and gold, subtly reflects on the calm waters and reinforces the poetry of this port atmosphere.The artist, active at the end of the 19th century, was inspired by Dutch masters such as Willem van de Velde, Bakhuizen or Jan van de Cappelle. He captures its atmospheric effects, its precise details and its elegant layout, whilst retaining a free touch and a sensitivity specific to his time. The work of the figures, the finesse of the sails and the delicate reflections on the water demonstrate a beautiful quality of execution. The work is presented in a sober and elegant 20th century frame, in very good condition.
