Medici Lion, 19th Century
Beautiful chased bronze sculpture of a Medici lion, the sphere under its left paw (wear).
Black marble base with doucine (small chips - dimensions: width 20 x height 2.2 x depth 11.5 cm).
Second half of the 19th century.

The Medici lions are two marble sculptures of lions that were placed on either side of the entrance to the Villa Medici in Rome. Each lion holds a sphere under its paw, in reference to the six balls of the Medici coat of arms. Installed since 1600, they were finally moved in 1789 to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, although copies can still be found there.
