Pietro Novelli. 'Saint Peter'. An unpublished oil on canvas depicting the first of the Apostles, Saint Peter, holding a key. This painting was likely part of a series of the 12 Apostles, which has since been lost. The style, which is both raw and sculptural, attests to the exceptional mastery of this artist from Monreale. In this painting, we observe a strong formal debt to Ribera, whom he encountered in Naples around 1630, while achieving greater expressive intensity and formal refinement. 52x42 cm on the original canvas.
