Ceramic Naiad Bowl, Iridescent Highlights - 19th Century
Clément Massier, French ceramist born 1845, died 1917.
He established himself as one of the leading exponents of iridescent ceramics, with metallic reflections, also known as "lustre". The technique probably originated in Iraq in the 9th century B.C.
He won a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
In 1898, he presented fifteen pieces with metallic reflections at the Salon de la Société des Artistes français. He called on renowned collaborators, whose themes were very numerous and, far from small-scale artisan pottery. By 1897, his factory employed 65 workers.
