Ent. Of Giuseppe-maria Crespi (1665-1747) Seamstresses
Artist: Entourage De Giuseppe-maria Crespi
Giuseppe-Maria CRESPI (1665, Bologna - 1747), entourage of
Surprised seamstresses at work
Oil on canvas
H. 35 cm; L. 23 cm
This small, charming painting, of very fine quality, is representative of Italian genre painting in the early 18th century.
While the author has not yet been identified, he is probably from the entourage of Crespi, who on numerous occasions depicted scenes from the lives of humble people (housewives, cooks, washerwomen, etc.), in dark atmospheres where the figures are enhanced by accentuated lighting.
Our artist succeeds in restoring the dignity, the eagerness to work and the accuracy of the attitudes of these seamstresses, barely interrupted in their work by his entry into the room.
The rendering of fabrics and materials is remarkable, thanks to the fluid brushwork.
