SABRE D'OFFICIER DES TROUPES DE MARINE, First Republic. 34148
Brass frame. Two-branch hilt. Twenty-strand fluted cast brass handle. Montmorency-style curved blade with hollow sides, length 55.5 cm, width at heel 6 cm; engraved with military trophies, floral decorations with fleur-de-lys, heel with cartouche engraved with floral decorations. Tie in scarlet cloth.

Good condition, blade with wear oxidation, tip broken off. Without scabbard.
NOTE:
This type of saber was used from the end of the reign of Louis XVI to the beginning of the First Empire 1804. Its design was inspired by that of general officers from 1788 to 1793. A similar example is shown in Michel Pétard's "Des sabres et des épées", tome 3ème, figure 338, page 130, as well as in Admiral Eric Schérer's "Les Marins Français 1789 - 1830", page 70.
