The Tommy service by SAINT-LOUIS holds a singular place in the history of French crystal. Created in 1928, it rapidly becomes one of the great symbols of French luxury and refined tableware.
Originally, Tommy is conceived to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War. Its name pays tribute to the “Tommies”, the nickname given to British soldiers. From its inception, the model is intended as a prestigious service for grand diplomatic receptions and official tables.
Tommy brings together the full decorative vocabulary of SAINT-LOUIS:
• deeply star-cut foot,
• diamond and bevel cuts,
• pearl and almond motifs,
• architecturally faceted stem,
• exceptionally brilliant lead crystal.
The model achieves its consecration in 1938 during the celebrated banquet held in the Galerie des Glaces at the Château de Versailles in honour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. More than 2,000 Tommy glasses are laid for the occasion, definitively establishing the model as one of the great icons of French prestige.
Among collectors, however, the most sought-after versions remain the coloured roemers.
Historically, the roemer, or Römer, refers to a Rhineland wine glass traditionally intended for the wines of the Rhine and Alsace regions. Its tall silhouette, flared bowl and short stem originate in the Germanic glassmaking traditions of the 16th and 17th centuries. SAINT-LOUIS reinterprets this historic form here in the spirit of the Tommy model with remarkable sophistication.
Tommy roemers thus emerge as a meeting point between the tradition of coloured Rhineland wine glasses, French cut crystal craftsmanship, and the Art Deco aesthetic of the 1920s and 1930s.
The contrast between the depth of the colours and the brilliance of the cutting creates a particularly spectacular luminous effect on a table.
