Schiedges studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague before being taught by Louis Meijer, one of the greatest marine painters of his time. Meijer's influence can be seen in the dramatic skies, romantic lighting and animated waves of Schiedges' compositions. However, he developed a personal style, characterized by meticulous attention to shipbuilding and nautical detail.
Themes and styleHis work consists mainly of seascapes, river landscapes and harbor scenes depicting working Dutch ships. In addition to oil painting, he also produced watercolors, drawings, etchings and lithographs. The combination of technical accuracy and romantic composition gives his work both documentary and artistic value.
Exhibitions and legacySchiedges exhibited from an early age in Amsterdam and The Hague between 1827 and 1857. Today, his works are held in several Dutch museum collections, including the Maritiem Museum Prins Hendrik. From 1871 until his death in 1876, he also held the position of curator of the Municipal Museum of The Hague.
