Portrait Of A Man Wearing A Top Hat, Oil On Canvas Attributed To Tom Roberts 1888
Portrait of a man wearing a top hat, attributed to Tom Roberts, 1888
Thomas William Roberts (1856-1931) was an English-born Australian artist and a key member of the Heidelberg School art movement, also known as Australian Impressionism. After studying in Melbourne, he went to Europe in 1881 to further his education, returning home in 1885 "steeped in the latest artistic innovations". That year, with Frederick McCubbin, he founded the Box Hill Artists' Camp, the first of a series of outdoor camps attended by members of the Heidelberg School. Together with Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder, they organized Australia's first resolutely avant-garde art exhibition in 1889.
