Henri Adrien Tanoux
Portrait of a young girl, signed Tanoux and dated 1904.
Oil on canvas, 61 x 46 cm.
Framed, 67 x 53 cm.
“Most of his paintings are rich in color and form, but from Léon Bonnat he learned clarity of composition.
This blend of discipline and freedom is what makes his canvases so beautiful.”
Henri Adrien Tanoux studied at the Marseille School of Fine Arts before enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
There, he was taught by Léon Bonnat.
A precocious talent, he exhibited his work “Judith Showing the Head of Holofernes to the Jewish People” at the Paris Salon during his first year at the school, where it garnered attention. In 1889, he received an honorable mention at the Universal Exposition in Paris.
In 1895, he won a travel grant thanks to a second and third class medal at the Salon of the same year. Inspired by his former teacher Léon Bonnat, Tanoux is primarily remembered for his magnificent Orientalist canvases, nudes and genre scenes.
