A native of southern Italyprobably from Lecce, we know little about the biography of Antonio Verrio.of Antonio Verrio, who is thought to have been a disciple of Piero di Cortona. He worked inRome and Florence before arriving in France, in Toulouse and then Paris in 1670where he decorated several private mansions. It was during this period that he would havepainted this composition as a celebration of Italian and French comedyFrench comedy. The composition is famous, and severalseveral versions.
