Avem - Pulegoso Vase - White Glass Vase
AVEM – MURANO GLASS ART
Pulegose vase
white blown glass with hot-applied decorations
h. 29 cm
Murano, 1934–1935
The vase has an ovoid shape—with a broad, generous belly that tapers gradually toward the short cylindrical neck—characterized by a profile of great volumetric completeness, fully in keeping with the formal canons of Murano art glass from the 1930s. Two symmetrical applications featuring lobed leaf-like elements, arranged on the sides of the shoulder, interrupt the continuity of the surface with a decorative motif of understated elegance, evoking in their serrated articulation the naturalistic imagery that runs through much of the ornamental production of the period. The base is circular and flattened, with a toric profile that ensures stability for the bulbous silhouette.
The entire surface is treated with the pulegoso technique: the opalescent white glass—a lattimo of great chromatic purity—is permeated by a homogeneous distribution of small and medium-sized air bubbles, which gives the glass mass a grainy and opaque appearance, far removed from the transparency of conventional crystal. In oblique light, the surface responds with a series of pearlescent and iridescent reflections that vary with the changing angle, creating a textural effect of extraordinary sensory quality. The white is not uniform but vibrant, modulated by the presence of air inclusions that capture and diffuse light in a discontinuous manner.
