Painted And Partially Glazed Terracotta Female Bust

Painted and partially glazed terracotta female bust

France, first half of the 20th century (ca. 1900–1940)

41 x 25 x 12 cm

Good overall condition

The bust depicts an elegant female figure, rendered with stylized, elongated features typical of the Art Nouveau style.

The face, of opaque finish, features simple yet expressive features, with half-closed eyes and a thin nose that lend the work an aura of quiet interiority.

The hair, gathered in a loose chignon, is treated with a glossy grayish-green glaze, creating a striking contrast with the matte surface of the face and neck.

On the right side of the bust, at shoulder height, are two roses in relief with foliage, a recurring ornamental detail in early 20th-century French decorative ceramics.

The drapery surrounding the base is also partially glazed, accentuating the sculptural quality of the piece.

The work is part of the tradition of decorative ceramics popular in France between the Belle Époque and the 1930s.
