Lodewijk Toeput, known in Italy as Ludovico Pozzoserrato, was born in Flanders around 1550. After a formative journey through Venice, Florence and Rome, he settled in Treviso in 1582, where he remained until his death. A refined and learned artist, he successfully merged the Flemish tradition, in which the influence of Hieronymus Francken I is recognisable, with Venetian colorism of Titianesque derivation, becoming the leading exponent of late Northern Mannerism in the Serenissima. Several works are preserved in Venetian museums, while numerous paintings and frescoes are found in the churches of the Marca Trevigiana.
The painting belongs to the tradition of amorous and pastoral subjects dear to Titian, recalling themes analogous to those of the Nymph and Shepherd at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the celebrated Concert champêtre at the Louvre. A close comparative example is the large Concerto in giardino preserved at the Museo Civico L. Bailo in Treviso. A group of ladies and gentlemen in late sixteenth-century dress animates the foreground within a dense, shadowy woodland that opens in the distance onto a luminous clearing with strolling figures. The earthy, brown palette of the undergrowth contrasts with the shimmering reflections of the costumes, rendered with the technical mastery characteristic of the artist. A small dog in the shadow at the right and barely discernible architectural forms in the background complete a scene of courtly leisure handled with quiet refinement.
