Francesco Zuccarelli (Pitigliano 1702 - Florence 1788) was one of the foremost landscape painters of 18th-century Italy. Trained in Florence and later in Rome, where he worked primarily in sacred and historical painting, he found his true calling after moving to Venice and turning to the genre of Arcadian landscape. Among his principal patrons was Consul Joseph Smith, through whom he became one of the most celebrated Italian artists in England, building an international reputation of the first order.
Zuccarelli's landscapes do not aim at a realistic rendering of nature but present it as an ideal place, suffused with serenity and diffused light. His style, rooted in the Rococo tradition, favours grace and compositional balance while avoiding the ornamental excess characteristic of the period. Compositions unfold across hills, trees and waterways arranged with measured care, within a soft, nuanced palette that defines a luminous and intimate atmosphere.
In the present painting a mysterious horseman wrapped in a red cloak occupies the centre of the scene, followed by two further figures on horseback. The figures are set within an idealised hilly landscape featuring the elements typical of the Master's production: a stream flowing between rocks, vegetation with almost evanescent foliage, and a village with its church in the background.
