Giuseppe Vasari Medieval Chess Set Gilt Silver Bronze Onyx Marble Board Italy
This Giuseppe Vasari chess set consists of thirty-two cast metal chessmen and an elevated, coordinating board. The pieces are manufactured from cast bronze using the lost-wax process and feature hand-finished 24K gold-plated (gilt) and silver-plated highlights. The figures are modeled in a medieval theme, including standing monarchs in ceremonial robes, rearing knights on warhorses, and rooks designed as detailed fortified towers. The pieces range in height from approximately 3.5 inches to 4.75 inches. The major figures, including the kings, queens, and knights, feature the artist's cast script signature "Vasari" on the exterior side or rear of their bases. Certain minor pieces, such as the rooks and bishops, do not contain visible signatures, which is a recognized characteristic of these handmade sets. The square chessboard measures approximately 20.75 inches and stands on four bronze corner supports shaped like horses. The playing surface is composed of alternating polished tiles of green onyx and red-toned marble, set into a heavy, ornate bronze frame. The frame's perimeter is decorated with high-relief neoclassical patterns. The entire set is made in Italy and reflects the traditional craftsmanship associated with La Bottega del Vasari.
