Wooden And Woven Straw Quivers
MASUANE - CERAM (INDONESIA)
EXEMPLAIRE REPRODUCED IN THE BOOK TRIBES - THE FIRST PEOPLE
COLLECTION JEAN-PIERRE DUTILLEUX
Important hollowed wooden quiver, quadrangular in shape, with its original lid, and adorned with a band of vegetable weaving with triangular geometric decoration, characteristic of the productions of the Masuane people, island of Seram (Moluccas, Indonesia).
This object was collected in the field by Jean-Pierre Dutilleux during his missions among the First Peoples.
This is the example reproduced in the reference work TRIBES - The First People, where it is illustrated in the section devoted to the Masuane. The formal correspondence (structure, proportions, braided decoration and lid) allows clear identification of the published piece.
Destined for transporting and protecting arrows, this type of quiver is an essential part of hunting equipment. The presence of the lid, often missing, reinforces the interest of this example preserved in its functional integrity.
The patina of use, traces of age and consistency of materials attest to an authentic object, used and collected in situ.
