Charming pair of expressive heads in the taste of 18th-century Germanic productions, evoking the Orientalist figures and "character heads" that met with great success in the Age of Enlightenment. Faces strongly modeled by light, long beards treated with suppleness and the contrast of colored fabrics against a dark background lend the ensemble an immediate decorative presence.
Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, known as Dietricy, was one of the most renowned German painters of the 18th century. Trained in Dresden and then active at the Saxon court, he distinguished himself by his remarkable talent for imitation and his taste for Flemish, Dutch and Italian masters. His work covers genre scenes as well as landscapes and fantasy figures, in a virtuoso manner that earned him an important European reputation.
This pair is part of this tradition of character figures inspired by the Northern European repertoire, where the expressive study of the face and lighting effects occupy a central place.
Nice decorative set, ideal for a cabinet, library or classical interior.
