Jean-Baptiste Le Prince was a French painter and draughtsman trained in the studio of François Boucher. Admitted to the Royal Academy in 1765, he is renowned for his interior scenes, gallant subjects, and genre compositions, blending a sense of narrative with a delicate observation of figures. His work, widely disseminated through prints from the 18th century onward, helped shape the French taste for these intimate scenes, which were revisited and appreciated throughout the 19th century.
This pair of prints, entitled "The Rising and The Setting," reproduces two compositions by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, elegantly and subtly illustrating moments of feminine intimacy. These scenes are part of the gallant tradition of the 18th century, characterized by a subtle balance between narrative, setting, and figures. The prints offered here are 19th-century impressions, made from the original compositions. They attest to the enduring popularity of these images, highly valued for their decorative quality. The two prints form a coherent pair, conceived as a set, which is an essential element of their appeal. Presented in 19th-century carved and gilded wood frames, they offer a harmonious decorative display, suitable for a classical or 18th-century interior.
Good overall condition. Note the presence of old damp stains visible in the margins, without affecting the engraved subjects. Wear and patina consistent with age and use.
Price: €350 for the pair
