Antique Ottoman Bronze Islamic Ewer Pitcher Crescent Moon Finial Aftaba 32cm
Cast bronze ewer, commonly known as an aftaba, features a hand-formed bulbous body and a splayed pedestal foot. The vessel is topped with a tapered neck and a lid characterized by a prominent crescent moon finial. A long, slender spout extends from the upper shoulder and curves upward, terminating in a flared opening. The spout is decorated with a series of diagonal, spiraling raised lines. The entire piece measures approximately 32 centimeters in height, 23 centimeters in width, and 11 centimeters in depth, with a weight of 1.5 kilograms. A significant feature of this piece is a hand-stamped calligraphic mark located on the main body. This mark is contained within a pointed, onion-dome shaped cartouche and contains cursive Arabic script. The bronze surface exhibits an aged, multi-tonal patina with dark oxidation in recessed areas and lighter metallic highlights on raised surfaces. The body shows various indentations, hammered textures, and fine surface pitting consistent with traditional metalworking and age. The calligraphic seal is partially worn but remains legible, with several fine surface scratches running through the lower half of the cartouche. The construction is solid with no visible repairs, showing only the irregularities typical of hand-cast and hand-tooled historical bronze.
