This painting bears similarities to a pastel by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (cf. Jean-Pierre Cuzin, Jean-Honoré Fragonard : Vie et oeuvre : Catalogue complet des peintures, Fribourg, 1987, p. 231, fig. 290), sold at Sotheby's in New York on January 25, 2023, lot 39. This kinship suggests a common compositional origin and could indicate the existence of a common model or preparatory invention within the artist's studio.
Another point of comparison is provided by a small format depicting the same subject, sold in Paris by Mes Mirabeau et Mercier on November 24, 2023 (grisaille ovale on canvas, 19 × 15.4 cm). This work, executed in grisaille and in a reduced format, seems to retain the essential elements of the composition and can be interpreted, as a hypothesis, as a modello or later variant, testifying to the transmission and adaptation of the drawing.
Taken together, these related works situate this painting within a larger corpus of repetitions and variations, characteristic of Jean-Honoré Fragonard's creative process, where motifs were reworked across different media and formats.
Warning!
The period frame has been consolidated by a professional restorer; however, it has not undergone any restoration and retains its original surface and patina.
