This charcoal was created by Adolphe Appian, a French painter and engraver from the Ecole de Lyon.
He began his career as a draftsman at the 1835 Paris Salon and the 1847 Lyon Salon.
In 1885, he participated in the first International White and Black Exhibition, in the "Charcoal" section, and won the gold medal of honor. He was nicknamed the "Delacroix of charcoal"
