Gandhara civilization, 1st century, Large and rare bronze Buddhist ring decorated with a representation of Buddha, haloed head, seated in meditation posture.
The Gandhara region, from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, played a major role in the epic of Buddhism, a spirituality which, by rejecting any idea of caste, was to shake up the order of the world. Thus, Buddhist art, breaking with the master's instructions, appropriated the most beautiful forms of various Greek, Indian, Persian and other artistic cultures to present Buddha in human form to the faithful, an enlightened man full of wisdom and compassion. His representation is thus the subject of numerous creations such as this bronze jewel.
