"France, Auxerrois, Late 19th Century, Polychrome Earthenware Salad Bowl Known As "tree Of Love""
Auxerrois, late 19th century, superb polychrome high-fire earthenware salad bowl with a so-called "tree of love" decoration. This theme was very popular during the last third of the 18th century until the very beginning of the 19th century. Six women are at the foot of a tree in which ten men are perched, at the top of which an angel sits. In search of a husband, they endeavor to seduce them or to force them down with the aim of romantic conquest. In this respect, the iconography is avant-garde because it gives the initiative of this conquest to women. The texts that accompany the scenes, both on the wing and in the center of the composition, are always very crisp, oscillating between the amusing and the ridiculous. The salad bowl bears mention of the year 1775 because it was at this time that the salad bowls called "with the tree of love" were most often created, mainly in Nevers. Very pretty colors and beautiful quality of execution. Diameter: 35 (cm). Good condition except for a discreet crack at the bottom right and three chips on the wings caused by the wall mounting system, as very often. All without any impact on the aesthetics. We take particular care with our packaging by using optimal protection. The shipment is carried out with insurance included.
