18th-century Oil On Canvas After David Teniers, “witches Preparing For The Sabbath”
Artist: D’après David Teniers (1610 - 1690)
A significant anonymous oil on canvas with a later gilded stucco frame, Flemish school, depicting an interior scene of witches inspired by the grand magical scenes of the 17th and 18th centuries.
This painting is an 18th-century reinterpretation of the painting by David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690) known as “Preparations for the Witches’ Sabbath,” as well as the engraving created in 1755 by Jean Jacques Aliamet (1726–1788) under the title “Departure for the Sabbath,” a contemporary of the work offered for sale.
The composition centers on an old woman preparing a potion in a dimly lit interior filled with demons and esoteric elements: a candle, a skull, an hourglass, cards, vials, and accessories associated with alchemy and vanities. This iconography draws on a tradition in which witchcraft serves as a metaphor for human passions, time, and earthly corruption.
The reverse bears the inscription:
“After David Teniers 1610 / 1690 – Copy c. 1770/1790.”
Examination of the work reveals an old paint layer with a network of cracks consistent with natural aging and consistent with the date indicated on the reverse. The canvas visible on the reverse appears to be the result of a later re-stretching, likely carried out as part of a previous restoration.
This painting has a strong decorative presence and fits within the aesthetic of cabinets of curiosities as well as collections devoted to esotericism or Flemish genre painting.
Condition: Good overall condition. Visible wear, craquelure, and previous restorations. Missing gilding in the frame in places.
