Jacob Desmalter - Pair Of Empire Period Mahogany Chairs - Stamped.

Artist: Jacob Desmalter
Pair of Empire lounge chairs in mahogany and mahogany veneer, with straight, slightly curved back, palmette and scrolled armrests and baluster legs. Our armchair is richly upholstered in yellow-gold and white silk, with a rosette motif for the seat and a palmette surrounded by a laurel wreath for the back (Lelièvre). Late Empire period, early 19th century, circa 1810. Stamped by Jacob Desmalter et Cie JACOB. D. R. MESLEE, used between 1803 and 1813. Each seat bears an illegible handwritten château label.

The Jacob dynasty was probably the most prestigious French joiner-cabinetmaker of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with immense success as suppliers to the Garde-Meuble Impérial (as well as the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne before and after the Empire). The chairs produced by Jacob's workshop are recognized, in particular, for the very high quality of their workmanship, consistently perfect proportions and great originality in the creation of new shapes and models.

It is interesting to note, when analyzing the Jacobs' production, that the chair models produced by this prestigious workshop are very often a combination of decorative motifs, leg shapes, armrests, belt-back armrest connections that are found from one salon furniture to another, thus ensuring the client a unique model, while allowing productivity gains for the Jacobs' workshop, which hired up to 350 workers under the Empire.

Beautiful model, the proportions are generous, the chairs are comfortable due to its curved back. We are selling a suite of matching armchairs, as well as a third armchair and a third chair on request, to create a more complete set of salon furniture (see photos).

Very good overall condition, reupholstered and covered to the nines in this beautiful luminous silk 10 years ago. The fabric is in very good home condition, no stains, a few light traces of use. The old varnish on the mahogany has been cleaned and repolished by our cabinetmaker.
