Carlo X–louis Philippe Chest Of Drawers In Walnut And Burl, Italy, Circa 1830
An important Italian chest of drawers from the transitional period between the reigns of Charles X and Louis-Philippe, crafted around 1830 from solid walnut and burl walnut. The piece features a simple yet elegant design, still rooted in the late Empire style but already moving toward the softer, more bourgeois forms typical of the Louis-Philippe period. The front is embellished with spectacular walnut burl featuring a very dynamic and deep grain, creating a strong decorative impact. Comprising two large main drawers and a contoured under-top drawer, it still retains much of its original structure. Inside, there are thick antique drawer liners made from hand-hewn planks, still bearing the marks of gouges and the artisanal craftsmanship of the era. The back panel is also constructed from antique planks of considerable thickness. The locks on the two main drawers are original period pieces, while the lock on the upper drawer was replaced in the past. Numerous original forged nails are still present. The legs were restored or replaced during the 20th century as part of an earlier conservation effort, now considered historic and consistent with the piece’s history. The finish also shows traces of restorations and maintenance carried out over time. A piece of furniture of great structural solidity, characterized by high-quality materials, a strong aesthetic presence, and remarkable craftsmanship. Upon request, we can perform conservation work or aesthetic restorations through our specialized workshop, agreeing on the scope of work based on the client’s needs.
