Russian icon depicting the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist (Ussekovenie glavy Ioanna Predtechi), produced at the end of the 19th century. The composition depicts the moment of the saint's martyrdom: the executioner raises his sword over John the Baptist, while on the right, Salome presents the saint's head on a plate. At the top is the Lord blessing in the clouds.
Tempera on levkas. Beautiful palette dominated by deep red-ochre and green tones, with a fine, expressive design.
Satisfactory condition with wear and small scratches from use, slight losses and traces of time consistent with age. Stable structure.
