Russian School, Devotional Triptych Of Christ Pantocrator, 19th Century

RUSSIAN SCHOOL, 19th Century
Domestic Devotional Triptych (or Icon Triptych) in Wood Composed of Three Arched Panels Articulated by Brass Hinges, Depicting at the Center Christ Pantocrator Vested in a Red Tunic and Blue Mantle, Holding Open Gospels, Flanked on the Side Wings by Heads of Cherubim and Seraphim Emerging from Clouds
Oil on wood panel in the Western academic manner.
Imperial Russia, second half of the 19th century.
H 40 cm – L 54 cm (unfolded)

Good overall condition.

In the 19th century, under the influence of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts of Saint-Petersburg, Russian religious art strongly integrated Western pictorial codes (Italian and Germanic academicism). This type of folding private oratory triptych, combining the central classical figure of Christ blessing with the gentle faces of winged angels in the clouds, reflects the evolution of private devotion under the reigns of Alexander II and Alexander III, blending traditional piety and Romantic aesthetic.

This travel and domestic devotional triptych exemplifies the academic style developed in 19th-century Russian religious painting, uniting the softness of the figures with the elegance of its natural wood framing.
