Icon of Saint Charalambos
Russia, late 19th century
Tempera on levkas, gilded background
Wooden panel with two cross-bars
Dimensions: 36 × 30 cm
An icon depicting Saint Charalambos, one of the most venerated early Christian martyrs, shown as a bishop wearing an omophorion decorated with crosses and holding an open Gospel. His right hand is raised in blessing.
In the upper left register appears Christ Pantocrator, blessing from the clouds — an iconographic element emphasizing the spiritual dignity of the saint.
The painting is of good quality, with a vivid palette and a restrained treatment of the face, typical of Russian workshop production of the late 19th century. The gilded aureole shows natural patina.
Condition: good — stable paint layer, age-related wear, surface craquelure, solid panel with its original cross-bars.
A representative example of late 19th-century Russian icon workshops, with balanced composition and careful execution.
