Pair Of French 19 Century Porcelain Composition Of Orientalist Couple With Musical Instruments

A pair of large, period Orientalist-style polychrome ceramic pieces serving as monumental bookends.
Each figure depicts a musician seated in front of an ancient ruin with columns and beneath a stylised palm tree forming the upright: on one side, a young Oriental woman wearing a turban and a draped mauve dress, playing a tambourine or an oud-style lute; on the other, a young man wearing a white turban, dressed in a turquoise embroidered waistcoat and baggy trousers, playing an instrument (lute or saz). The square bases with stepped edges are designed to resemble marble and are adorned with a classically inspired relief frieze.
France. Late 19th century (Historicism/Orientalism period), circa 1885–1900.
