Antoine Calbet (1860-1942) was a French painter, illustrator and draughtsman specializing in genre scenes and portraits. A pupil of Edouard-Antoine Marsal and then Alexandre Cabanel, he exhibited at the Salon from 1880 and became a member of the Société des Artistes français. He illustrated numerous works by Pierre Louÿs, Henri de Régnier, Paul Verlaine, etc., and also took part in the decor of the restaurant "Le Train bleu" in 1900. That same year, he took part in the Exposition Universelle, where he was awarded a silver medal for a panel created for the pavilion of the Ministry of Colonies. From 1913 to 1930, he was a member of the jury for admission to the Beaux-Arts in Paris. His works, featuring women in the spotlight, take up the aesthetic codes of 18th-century painting, particularly fêtes galantes, which Calbet interprets through compositions imbued with an elegant coquetry.
