Funa Dansu , Merchant Ship Chest.japan
A ship's chest that held documents and money in a special box that is still there today. Made in Ogi on the island of Sado in Zelkova. At the end of the 19th century, Sado was the place where the most beautiful examples like this one were made. The chest has 2 upper drawers and a large lower drawer. In the middle, 2 hinged doors close onto a central sliding door that opens onto drawers and a door with a false lock (hikidashi/hirakido-gata style)
The thick, eyo-kurigata (abstract curves) metalwork harmonizes well with the tama- moku, the magnifying glass of the chest.
Traces and marks on the top of the chest can be seen in the photos.
