"duchesse" In Gilded Wood - Late Regency - Louis XV Period
important Regency period "Duchesse à oreilles" - Circa 1725
This chaise longue, known as a "duchesse à oreilles", is a testament to late Regency cabinetmaking. It illustrates the pivotal period when the rigor of the Louis XIV style faded in favor of curved lines and a search for graceful comfort.
Technical features:
Joinery: Frame in natural wood (beech) entirely carved and gilded with leaf.
Ornamentation:
The lower crosspiece is curved and centered on a large openwork shell, framed by foliage scrolls and floral motifs characteristic of the ornamental repertoire of the 1720's. It rests on eight arched legs, carved with flower falls and ending in hooves.
State of preservation:
There are old traces of xylophagous insects, the structure is sound.
Presence of beautiful leaf gilding . The furniture is currently upholstered in the "Orion" model from Tassinari & Chatel, a famous silk manufacturer from Lyon and supplier to the Château de Versailles. Although the current fabric requires total replacement to restore the furniture to its former glory, this prestigious historical reference confirms the piece's high craftsmanship and stylistic consistency.
The traditional seat on straps is in good condition. The upholstery consists of a thick layer of feathers, offering plush comfort.
A large-scale piece
With a length of 201 cm and a depth of 85 cm, this duchess has generous dimensions that set it apart from more modest models or "convenience chairs". It occupies a substantial surface area, requiring sufficient distance to appreciate the curved line of the frame and the movement of the eight legs.
Proportions: its 107 cm height at the back ("ears") makes it a high-backed piece of furniture, ideal for structuring a large living room or master bedroom.
