Laughing Buddha In 'blanc De Chine' Dehua Porcelain - 20th Century
Important porcelain sculpture from Dehua (Fujian Province), characterized by its unctuous glaze of pure, brilliant white. The piece depicts Budai, the Buddhist monk with a rounded belly, the embodiment of benevolence and prosperity.
Face and Expression : The modeling shows a jovial face with finely detailed features, eyes crinkled with laughter and ears with elongated lobes, symbols of wisdom.
Attributes : He wears around his neck an imposing rosary (mala) whose grains are precisely carved in relief. He is dressed in a loose monastic robe revealing his chest and abdomen. The folds of the robe are treated with characteristic fluidity, embracing the shape of the right leg.
Material : The fineness of the grain and the translucency of the porcelain suggest quality workmanship, typical of the Dehua kiln tradition.
The piece presents a very healthy surface appearance. Note the shine of the glaze, which appears to show no visible restoration.
