Laughing Buddha In 'blanc De Chine' Dehua Porcelain - 20th Century

An important Dehua porcelain sculpture (Fujian Province), characterized by its rich, pure white, and glossy glaze. The piece depicts Budai, the round-bellied Buddhist monk, an embodiment of benevolence and prosperity.

Face and Expression:

The modeling features a jovial face with finely detailed traits, eyes crinkled with laughter, and elongated earlobes, symbols of wisdom.

Attributes:

He wears a large prayer bead necklace (mala) around his neck, with beads precisely carved in relief. He is dressed in a loose monastic robe revealing his chest and abdomen. The folds of the robe are rendered with characteristic fluidity, following the contour of the right leg.

The fine grain and translucency of the porcelain suggest high-quality craftsmanship, typical of the Dehua kiln tradition.

Condition:

The piece displays a very sound surface condition. Note the brilliance of the glaze, which shows no visible restoration.
