Louis XIV / Régence Period Boulle Cartel Clock
Rare Louis XIV – early Régence period Boulle marquetry wall cartel clock, elegantly illustrating the transition between the monumental rigor of the Grand Siècle and the emerging decorative fluidity of the early 18th century.
The case features a sumptuous "première partie" marquetry, combining brown tortoiseshell and engraved brass. The execution is remarkably fine, showcasing a rich repertoire of arabesques, floral scrolls, and interlaced patterns characteristic of the finest Parisian workshops of the period.
The front is adorned with a remarkable chased bronze allegory, likely representing Wisdom or Knowledge, depicted as an antique-draped woman holding a book. At her feet stands a wading bird—a heron or stork—a traditional symbol of Vigilance and Patience. This iconography is rare and particularly refined in horology of this era.
The gilded bronzes powerfully emphasize the clock’s architecture with the following elements:
A large gadrooned flaming urn finial. Spandrels and feet featuring broad acanthus leaves. Finely chased pendulum aperture frame and apron.
The original movement is signed on the backplate: "Clouzier à Paris," attributable to Jacques Clouzier, who became a Master Watchmaker in 1692 and was established on Rue Saint-Antoine in Paris. He was a renowned clockmaker during the reign of Louis XIV.
Dial: Thirteen blue enamel cartouches on a gilded bronze background. Escapement: Suspension spring (lamella) escapement. Chime: Includes its silver-alloy bell, producing a clear and harmonious tone.
Presented in very good overall condition. The piece has undergone historical restorations and conservation work over time, notably on the bronzes (repairs and regilding) and certain marquetry elements, all performed in keeping with the piece's aesthetic integrity. The marquetry is stable, and the bronzes exhibit a consistent overall patina.
Mechanism: The movement is complete. A routine service is recommended; the striking mechanism is currently functioning irregularly. The clock is sold in its current mechanical condition.
