Enameled Stoneware Dish. Japan Kutani Kilns 19th Century.
Artist: Kutani
Large brownware dish enameled with a design of Chinese children in reserves. The reverse is covered with a deep green enamel. The decoration is highly symbolic: in one of the reserves, the jar and 2 children symbolize a wonderful birth, while the other reserve shows 3 children holding a dog on a leash, ensuring the family's protection. In the center is the phoenix, a feminine protective principle. This dish augurs family happiness under the protection of the beneficial feminine principle.
