Elegant pair of candelabra in brown patinated bronze and gilded bronze with mercury, made during the Restoration period, circa 1825-1830.

These candelabra are distinguished by a particularly refined and unusual architecture, resting not on a single central column but on a shaft composed of three slender rudenté columns joined together, giving the whole a slender, highly architectural silhouette. This tripartite composition reinforces the effect of verticality while evoking certain neoclassical models inspired by Antiquity.

The overall design is fully in keeping with the archaeological taste of the early 19th century, fueled by ancient discoveries and renewed interest in Greco-Roman, Etruscan and Pompeian art. The upper part is directly reminiscent of antique oil lamps: a central circular basin treated like an antique bowl accommodates three sinuous arms of light terminating in finely cut corolla-shaped binnacles. In the center is a stylized flame-shaped socket, evoking the burners of Roman lamps.

The entire decoration is based on a remarkable work of foliage that literally covers the forms. The capitals and connections are composed of acanthus leaves, palmettes and plant motifs treated with suppleness, in a highly organic ornamental vocabulary where the sculpture seems to envelop the very architecture of the candelabra. The light arms, attachments, bases and pedestals also develop the same leafy language, giving the whole a great decorative unity.

The particularly sculptural tripod base rests on three powerful scrolled leafy supports, terminating in a concave terrace adorned with a frieze of gilded canals. The contrast between the deep brown patina and the matte gilding beautifully highlights the volumes and richness of the decoration.

With their elegant proportions, antique inspiration and quality of execution, these candelabras are part of the great tradition of French decorative bronzes of the Restoration period, direct heirs to the Empire taste but already animated by a more supple and picturesque design.

Antique brown patina and original gilding. There is some slight wear and fading to the gilding, consistent with age and use, but the ensemble nevertheless retains a very fine decorative appearance and a good general state of preservation.

Height: 64 cm.
