Silver Toothpick Holder , 1840-1860, Lisbon , Paliteiro
Artist: Non Identifié
Lovely solid silver toothpick holder dating from the mid-nineteenth century.
It bears the guarantee hallmark of the city of Lisbon and a master silversmith's hallmark that I have not yet identified.
It is in perfect condition.
The central figure on this "paliteiro" is an Amero-Indian wearing an impressive feather headdress.
These paliteiros have existed in Portugal since the seventeenth century, but became very popular in the nineteenth century.
This popularity was exported to Brazil when the royal court moved there at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Ours is quite large and weighs 245 grams.
