"Wolfers, 1930-1933, “jade” Coffee Service, Solid Silver, Brussels, Art Deco"
Very elegant Art Deco period tea and coffee service in solid silver and rosewood. This is the famous "Jade" model published around 1930 by the famous and prestigious goldsmith and fine jewelry house Wolfers frères in Brussels. The Wolfers house was founded by Louis Wolfers in the middle of the nineteenth century and became during the Belle Époque a world reference in fine jewelry, goldsmithing and objects of virtue with points of sale in Belgium, the Netherlands but also in Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Paris, etc. And this thanks to the immense artistic and commercial talent of Louis' son, Philippe Wolfers. This success, both economic and artistic, suffered a serious setback at the end of the twenties. The economic crisis melted the turnover, it was above all the death of Philippe Wolfers on December 13, 1929 which caused an existential crisis. But the Wolfers brothers and cousins reorganized and set out to conquer new customers with new creations of goldsmithing and jewelry. It was in this highly difficult context that the famous "Jade" range was published and produced from 1932-1933. Like the legendary "Joconda" collection created by Philippe Wolfers for the 1925 exhibition of decorative arts in Paris, this is also a collection containing table cutlery, salt shakers, candlesticks, napkin rings, vegetable dishes, sauce boats, serving dishes, a soup tureen and also a tea and coffee service like the one I present to you here. This collection will remain in the sales catalog until the end of the Wolfers house. And it will be a great commercial success, especially after the Second World War. The set that I am offering for sale is made before 1942, which is very rare. Its matching tray dates from after 1942. All the pieces are made of solid 833% silver.
