The two lions, conceived as a mirrored pair for heraldic decoration, are depicted seated with their front paws raised and tails erect, originally intended to hold a staff bearing a noble coat of arms. The mane is rendered in the round with careful plastic articulation, finely gilded; the body is boldly carved and coated in brown pigment. Each figure rests on a shaped octagonal base painted to simulate marble. The typology relates to the Venetian decorative tradition of the late sixteenth century, within which heraldic figures of this kind were employed in civic, noble and religious settings.

Condition report: Good general state of conservation; signs of aging and wear are present, with partial losses to the paws and tail tips. Localized losses and flaking to the painted and gilded surfaces.
