Tobacco Box/tabatière In Corozo Walnut -france - Early 19th Century
Tabatière in carved corozo, early 19th century work, Napoleonic period. The piece adopts the form of a small animal, probably a dog, finely depicted with an elongated snout and floppy ears, treated with a certain naturalism.
The body is richly adorned with a high-relief decoration of coiled foliage, flowers and plant motifs, executed with great meticulousness. This ornamentation covers the entire snuffbox and testifies to the refined craftsmanship characteristic of the period.
The end features a light-tinted turned bone cap, contrasting elegantly with the warm honey-brown patina of the corozo. The lid, cleverly concealed within the composition, opens onto an interior cavity intended for snuff.
The set has a beautiful old patina, with consistent traces of use, including wear, small shrinkage cracks and a few slight chips, attesting to its age.
