Pressed Wood Box: Battle Of Waterloo, Napoleon—
Pressed wood box: Battle of Waterloo—Napoleon’s Imperial Guard: “Die, but never surrender.”
This phrase has been attributed to General Cambronne. He is said to have addressed it to the British troops who were ordering him to surrender along with the Imperial Guard he commanded during the Battle of Waterloo, while he was already wounded. Waterloo, a town located in Brabant (Belgium), witnessed the final defeat of Emperor Napoleon Ier, following his return from Elba and the period known as the “Hundred Days.” The Battle of Waterloo pitted him against Wellington’s British forces and Blücher’s Prussians on June 18, 1815.
The bottom of the box is adorned with the Legion of Honor medal, flanked on either side by the words “honor” and “fatherland,” encircled by a laurel wreath.
Two small slits on the side.
