Museum Fireback Bearing The Coat Of Arms Of Charles III Of Lorraine, Dated 1570 ( 106 X112 Cm)
Museum fireback, cast in the sixteenth century, dated 1570 (in the corroded lower cartouche), with full arms of Lorraine, carried from 1545 until the eighteenth century, surmounted by the ducal crown and surrounded by the necklace of Saint Michel, distinction awarded to Charles III in 1558 during the reign of Henry II. Its background in the artistic vocabulary of the Renaissance offers an opulent setting of scrolls, florets and bouquets of fruit. Its frame is made up of gadroons, acanthus leaves, and alternate shells.
A similar plaque is presented at the Lorrain Museum in Nancy, acquired in 1891, a gift from the city of Nancy, coming from one of the houses on the rue des Dominicans that was demolished for the enlargement of the Town Hall by architect Prosper Morey around 1862, date on which another plaque was given to the Musée Lorrain, coming from the same street of the Dominicans, in January 1863, "which has just been demolished to enlarge the Town Hall".
Our plaque was found at Vigneulles les Hattonchâtel, (chief town of the canton, arr. de Commercy, Meuse), whose castle was the first fortress of the bishopric of Verdun and the ordinary seat of its court of the Grands-Ducs.Days: a charter of 1352 specifies that Hattonchâtel was the main place where bishops made coins until 1546, when the lordship was ceded by Bishop Nicolas de Lorraine to his nephew, Duke Charles III, to repay a debt of 120,000 francs incurred by Cardinal Jean de Lorraine, bishop of Verdun, to his brother Duke Antoine. This former castellany was erected as a marquisate in 1608.
