Corozo Nut Snuffbox, Napoleonic Period - France - Early 19th Century
Beautiful corozo nut snuffbox, finely carved in relief, dating from the early 19th century, Napoleonic period. Elongated and slightly curved, it features rich, narrative decoration covering the entire surface.
The main face is decorated with a genre scene depicting two figures in a rustic environment, probably a domestic or rural scene, with a building in the background and stylized vegetation. The figures, treated with a certain relief and sense of movement, illustrate a taste for popular representations of everyday life.
The ends are carved into expressive masks, giving the object both a decorative and symbolic dimension. The sides and reverse are adorned with a variety of motifs, including attributes evoking the arts or crafts (tools, stylized objects), as well as finely chiseled vegetal and geometric decorations.
The interior, hollowed out of the mass, has an antique patina consistent with the age of the object. The lid is mounted on a more recent hinge.
